It was created in 2001 by the Government of the Republic of Mauritius through Act of Parliament to manage and promote the Aapravasi Ghat Site. The site was declared National Monument under the National Monuments Act in 1987(GN31/87) and subsequently proclaimed National Heritage in 2003 under the National Heritage Act 2003.

The Trust’s guiding principles include:

  • To support activities related to Indentured Labour immigration.
  • To support projects that benefit all Mauritians and in which Mauritians from all walks of life can participate. This includes the conceptualization, planning and execution of projects.
  • To restore the links with the past and our origins those have been broken as a result of rapid modernization and to restore pride for our Indenture Heritage.
  • To carry our projects in a democratic spirit, in a historically accurate way and in full respect of the multi-cultural society in which we live.
  • To promote excellence rather than be satisfied with the basic minimum or the cheapest alternative.
